Of Note — November 16
I have never been happier to see a Friday in my life.
It’s been raining non-stop for days. Will we ever see the sun again? Who knows! Because of the rain, I got into a small car accident on Monday night after going to the Carolina basketball game (I hydroplaned while trying to stop at a stop sign and rear ended the person in front of me). I’m totally fine, but my poor car has been deemed a “total loss” (the value of the damage exceeds 75% of the total cost of the car). Now I’m likely going to have to find a new (aka used) vehicle. And — in a fun twist — I’m driving a borrowed car from my parents whose BATTERY DIED LAST NIGHT. When it rains, it pours. Literally. Have I mentioned that it’s never going to stop raining?
This weekend my sister and I are heading to eastern North Carolina with our friend Chelsey to visit her hometown. She’s from a teeny little place called Williamston (population is ~5,000), and we have plans to go to the local oyster bar and pop over to Edenton, another small town that was one of the first capitals of the colony of North Carolina. Should be fun after a rough week.
I’m currently reading Retta’s book So Close to Being the Sh*t, Y'all Don't Even Know. I love a good comedy/celebrity memoir, and it’s a fun and light read so far! But dear Lord do I ever wish she hadn’t gone to Duke. It’s fact I usually like to put in the back of my head, but it’s tough when she’s talking about it all throughout her book. I pre-ordered Michelle Obama’s book Becoming months ago. It’s here, and it’s beautiful, but I need to really be able to sit down and read it without distractions (AKA the library emailing me non-stop about silly books that are checked out on my Kindle). Once I finish my library books, I’m going all in with Michelle.
Life update — we got rid of cable! Sort of. We no longer have cable from a cable company, but we are now users of YouTubeTV. I like that you can have multiple log ins for one account (we have one for me, one for Haley, and one for our smart TV so we can all keep our own preferences). The search is great, it’s easy to navigate, there are lots of channels. So far, so great!
Despite the fact that I’m not yet reading Michelle Obama’s book, that doesn’t mean I’m not engaging with Becoming content at all. She was on 20/20, which I popped in the background and listened to her interview with Robin Roberts while I was at work. She also was on Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations, a pod that I adore, for a 2-part conversation. Robin is perfect, Oprah is perfect, Michelle is perfect. I feel like I’m learning so much just from the podcast, and I can’t wait to delve into the book soon.
Another life update — I signed up for Hello Fresh! I hadn’t been to the grocery store in a million years, and I just didn’t want to meal plan and go and shop. So I said, “Forget that,” and I ordered Hello Fresh. The first week was very tasty! I think my favorite recipe was the tex-mex tilapia with green beans and couscous. Next week I am very excited for my roasted tomato and zucchini flatbread with lemon ricotta, honey, basil and chili flakes.
Bartender friends who give you a glass of red while you’re waiting for your car battery to be jumped, being safe after a wreck, Carolina basketball games, seeing college pals, Hello Fresh, smart outlets, my new robe, the new Wales family photos, Paddington Bear on Jeopardy.
^ Side note — this is why I do this section. Initially I just wanted to write, “Literally nothing, this week is the worst.” But when I stopped to think about the little things that I loved this week, I realized how much good there was and how many things I have to be grateful for. Happy week of Thanksgiving/season of checking my privilege.
