Of Note — December 14
Happy happy first snow days of the year! We woke up on Sunday morning to a winter wonderland, and it’s really only disappeared as of today — that’s a super long time for North Carolina to keep snow in December! It was a cozy beginning of the week which led to a bonkers end of the week — multiple days worth of meetings jam-packed in Thursday and Friday. I had a work holiday party yesterday then went to go see Ira David Wood’s A Christmas Carol at DPAC, so despite the madness I am firmly in the holiday season.
I’m reading The Towering Heights by Katharine McGee, which is the third book in The Thousandth Floor trilogy that I started earlier this year. It’s like a futuristic Gossip Girl, and the books are excellent. Lots of cool technology and thought-provoking ideas of how society will be in the future, plus some parties and murders — you know, general teenage revelry!
Honestly, still nothing but The West Wing. All of my visual (and audio) content is being dominated by Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and Dulé Hill. And I’m not even a little upset about it.
I am going ALL IN on The West Wing Weekly right now. When the pilot first came out, I wasn’t a huge fan, and I never gave it a second shot (classic mistake). But the hosts, Josh Malina (an actor who was on TWW) and Hrishi Hirway (a musician who hosts the excellent podcast Song Exploder and has been a guest on my all-time fave Gilmore Guys multiple times) do a really phenomenal job. I think they do a good, but not stellar, analysis of the episode, but their real strength is in the interviews they do. They talk to the show big wigs (Aaron Sorkin himself, plus basically everyone else in the cast) to elected officials who love the show and can speak who issues they cover to people at NASA to shed more light on an episode to Hrishi’s friend who explain Hrishi’s obsession/annoying behavior in promoting one particular episode to him. I’m obsessed, and it’s basically all I’m listening to right now. If you’re a West Wing fan then you have to check it out.
Haley and I went to our very favorite Italian restaurant on Saturday night and had the most delicious dinner — red wine, bread, meatballs carbonara, truffle pasta, chocolate torte. If you haven’t been to Gocciolina, I’d suggest trying to get there for a meal as soon as you possibly can. Haley, some friends, and I were in Italy together during our semester abroad, and Gocciolina rivals (and beats) some of the meals we had there. I’m still dreaming about that dinner.
Snow days, pasta, puzzles, lions, Ira David Wood, Hamilton door knockers, rosé in the winter, Nancy Pelosi leaving the White House in her shades and orange coat, Meghan Markle in that black dress, Brooke’s first wedding pictures, the Cambridge’s and Sussex’s Christmas cards, TWO Liverpool victories — top of the table and through to the next stage of the Champion’s League.
