Of Note — September 21
Aloha from somewhere over Arizona! I am writing this en route to Honolulu, Hawaii, where I will spend the next ten days visiting my friend Claire. This trip started off with a bit of drama, so I am trying to unwind on this flight and be ready for a little R&R while I step off the plane. My mom drove me to Charlotte, NC, yesterday afternoon, where I spent the night at my college pal Ross's house before my 6:30am flight. Around 9pm I realized that I left my wallet in my apartment in Durham. Cue panic! Thanks to some heroic efforts from Ross, my sister, and my brother-in-law, we met in Greensboro just before midnight to hand off the wallet, and I safely made it onto my plane. I will never, ever forget it again.
I finished Less on my flight from Charlotte to Houston! I really can’t recommend it highly enough. In fact, I think I’m probably going to buy the book so I have a physical copy. There were a lot of beautiful or hilarious moments in the writing that I want to be able to go back to. Now I’m onto Rich People Problems, the third book in the Crazy Rich Asians series.
This week I watched and live-tweeted the Emmys for an online class that I’m taking at Carolina this fall — MEJO 711 Writing for Digital Media. It wasn’t the best Emmys ever — Colin Jost and Michael Che as hosts looked like they couldn’t have cared less about the show — but it was still enjoyable. I’m excited that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel took home a bunch of the comedy trophies, and I am absolutely THRILLED that Claire Foy won for best actress in a drama (the only acceptable winner besides Sandra Oh). The cast of The Crown changes starting with the next season, so I’m thrilled that she won on her last shot.
I just finished The Good Place the Podcast! The last episode, covering chapter 26 with show creator Mike Schur, was posted today. I wrote about it last week, but it really is a fantastic. Over the past week I’ve convinced multiple coworkers to start listening; I’m anticipating a podcast club when I get back from Hawaii.
NOTHING! Did you know that United does not provide a meal on the flight from Houston to Honolulu? It’s an 8 hour and 15 minute flight, and literally all they give you are pretzels (not even a choice of pretzels or cookies). It’s the longest flight I’ve ever been on — longer by an hour than flying to London, and they give you two meals on that flight — but we get nothing. I don’t know what food they have in the Honolulu airport, but I will be scarfing it down as soon as I arrive.
Getting a reply to my birthday card to Meghan Markle (!!!), celebrating a friend’s birthday with rose and tasty cocktails, Claire Foy, this photo of Kristen Bell and Sterling K. Brown from the Emmys, a new haircut and getting my hair curled, how cute Prince Harry was with Meghan at the cookbook event, iced matcha lattes, eye masks, and Liverpool beating PSG in the Champions League.
