Happy New Year and welcome to the first Of Note in 2019! I spent the long weekend for New Year’s Eve in DC with my roommate and other college friends and visiting old friends from when I lived in DC. I went to the Liverpool bar and watched them wallop Arsenal (let’s not talk about the Man City game yesterday) and visited a few DC museums (particularly the exhibition Pulse at the Hirshorn and the Obama portraits at the National Portrait Gallery). It was a lovely weekend and made me realize I actually do miss the city a little! Then I came home and wrote my rent check for half of what it was when I lived in DC, and I wasn’t sad any more.

I just started The Dinner List by Rebecca Serle, a novel about a woman who arrives at her 30th birthday to discover that the five people she put on her hypothetical “5 people, alive or dead, you’d invite to a dinner party” list are all in attendance. It’s alternating between the dinner conversations and flashbacks showing her relationship with some of the characters. I love thinking about my hypothetical dinner party list, so this is fun to read it from a character’s point of view. I’m only four chapters in, but so far so good!

Just The West Wing all the damn time. A new episode of The Good Place airs next Thursday — bet you can’t wait for me to start talking about that again!

I made the BEST meal with Trader Joe’s cauliflower gnocchi. I’m not usually one for “healthy” substitutes for food (if I want pasta, I’m just going to eat it, and if I want zoodles, I’m just going to eat them — it’s never the same when you swap). But I have discovered a true love for TJ’s cauliflower gnocchi and genuinely can’t taste a difference when it’s cooked correctly (don’t follow the package instructions). This week I sautéed them with a little butter in a cast iron skillet (letting them get crispy and golden) and added pesto, TJ’s frozen turkey meatballs, and parmesan. So easy and SO tasty. The cauliflower gnocchi is popular and often runs out, so I may or may not have bought 4 bags of it at the grocery store on Wednesday. Who’s to say?!
