Of Note — February 22
THE LION PUZZLE IS FINALLY FINISHED! Haley and I started that sucker on December 6th, and we didn’t finish it until last Friday — over two months. Granted we were away for Christmas for part of that and severely dejected/not trying for another part. But the behemoth has been put to bed, and we couldn’t be happier.
I love Bob Costas, and he recently spoke to ESPN’s Outside the Lines about the end of his professional (and in some cases personal) relationship with NBC. The man spoke honestly about the relationships between concussions, the NFL, and irreparable brain damage, and he paid a major price in his career. I appreciate Costas standing his ground and speaking emphatically about what he believes in, and it’s a fascinating thing to learn about the fall out. Check out the piece here.
Green Book — check! And that’s number 47 on my list; I have officially seen all of the Best Picture nominees before the Oscars. Haley and I went to the fancy theater (nice seats, food delivered to you) in Chapel Hill so we could finish our journey in the lap of luxury. Green Book is…interesting. When you’re in the theatre, it’s like objectively an enjoyable movie; Vigo and Mahershala have very good chemistry. If you stop and don’t think closely at all about it, then you’re good. But if you think about the script (problematic), it being made by basically all white men (problematic), the creators never talking to Don Shirley’s family (problematic), and the fact that in a movie about the Civil Rights era your lead actor is white and your supporting actor is black (v problematic)…it’s not great. This movie isn’t going to age particularly well. Overall my favorites were Black Panther, The Favourite, Blackkklansman, and A Star is Born.
I’ve loved listening to The Big Picture, a podcast from The Ringer. They’ve done a ton of content leading up to the Oscars, from analysis to predictions to interviews. Highly recommend for some great discussion of the 2018 year in film (along with my always-favorite Pop Culture Happy Hour from NPR).
We celebrated my friend Tessa’s birthday this week at Gonza Tacos y Tequila, a local restaurant that has a few locations throughout the Triangle area. I’ve only been a couple of times, but the food is so so tasty (and the margs are great too!).
Beating Duke, Barack Obama’s 44 bomber jacket (!!!!!!!!), mini Kit Kats, Twizzler nibs, rosé, magic bands at Pour, presentation party, getting friends’ wedding invitations, again — the EMBROIDERED BOMBER JACKET!
