Of Note — July 19
Just a regular old week here! Some workouts, some cooking, some friend time, and lots of sweating through a super hot week in North Carolina in July. Excited for a super full weekend celebrating my roommate’s birthday!
I just finished a book of essays called Southern Lady Code by Helen Ellis. I first saw it mentioned on the blog Cup of Jo (one of my favorites), and it is an absolute delight. Very short and easy to read essays that made me laugh out loud. Helen Michelle is brash and sassy and genuine when she talks about her Alabama upbringing and being a southern transplant on the Upper East Side. Southern Lady code means “if you don’t have something nice to say, you say something not-so-nice in a nice way.” I love it.
THE LION KING BABYYYYYYYY! I saw it last night (cried, sang, laughed, loved) and am seeing it again today. I know that the reviews haven’t been stellar, and I know that it’s just a cash grab by Disney — I don’t care. I loved it. I was too young to see the movie in theaters when it first came out, so it was an absolutely magical experience to see one of my favorite movies on the big screen. The music was great, the actors were great, the animation is just INSANE. I’m happy to discuss its merits and flaws with anyone, but I definitely recommend it.
I was extremely responsible on Amazon during Prime Day (plus every other store that offered a million deals) and didn’t purchase a single thing. All I did was sign up for three free months of Kindle Unlimited! Honestly in just a couple of days of poking around, I don’t think it’s worth it to pay for Kindle Unlimited, but I definitely will enjoy it until October. The really nice thing is that it comes with many books that are also audiobooks. So right now I’m listening to Pride and Prejudice! I’ve never read it before and am excited to add it to “read 5 classics” challenge on my 101 things list. I’ve seen the movie with Keira Knightley a few times and loved it (sadly never the BBC miniseries, which I need to check out), but the book is even better. It’s freaking hilarious. Can’t wait to keep going with it.
I made green lentil spaghetti for the first time, and it was surprisingly delicious! I’d had the box for forever but had just never gotten around to cooking it. I threw in some parmesan cheese, green goddess dressing, and a bunch of veggies I had in the fridge (haricots verts, corn, and edamame). It was a truly delicious meal.
Rewatching GBBO episodes, Disney remixes, naps, reclining chairs at movie theatres, flamingo pajamas, new shoes, giant bunnies who visit the office, white nail polish, Kate Middleton’s outfit at the Wimbledon men’s final, flash tats, Judi Dench and Ian McKellen laughing together in the Cats trailer.
The aforementioned giant bunny who visited the office. Appropriately, she was named Bunny.
